Writing- Improving students narrative writing

Description:

Please join Lesley McCarthy, Year 4 teacher Carramar Primary School, on how she used NAPLAN data to target these areas in writing to improve student results

  • Text Structure (both genres)
  • Persuasive Devices (Persuasive Text) & Audience (Narrative Text)
  • Sentence Structure (both genres)

 

To develop these areas, Lesley has developed resources and used specific strategies and structures to engage and assist students learning.

 

The first session, term 3 will be looking at narrative writing and in term 4, Persuasive writing.

Within this session on Narrative writing, Lesley will demonstrate the teaching strategies and structures she uses including:

  1. The use of acronyms - to support students in developing the three areas mentioned; text structure, audience & sentence structure.
  2. Cooperative Learning Structures - to engage and support student learning
  3. Gradual release model (Pie Corbett’s Copycat Method)
  4. Visible learning – Students analyse samples of text using resources using the NAPLAN marking guide.
